What is a backlink?

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Search engines treat backlinks from relevant, trustworthy sites as votes of confidence, making them one of the strongest ranking signals.

What a good backlink looks like

  • Relevant — from a site and page about a related topic.
  • Trusted — from a real site with its own audience and authority.
  • Editorial — given because the content deserved it, not bought.
  • In context — inside the main content with descriptive anchor text, not in a footer list.
  • Followed — a normal link without nofollow, sponsored or ugc passes the most value, though nofollow links still bring visitors and brand exposure.

How to use this report

  1. Analyse competitors. Enter a competitor's domain to see who links to them — sites that link to several competitors may link to you too.
  2. Check anchor text. A natural profile has mostly brand and URL anchors. Many exact-match keyword anchors can look manipulative.
  3. Find your best pages. The target column shows which pages attract links — create more content like them.
  4. Spot toxic links. Links from obvious spam networks rarely hurt today (Google ignores most of them), but large-scale paid links can lead to a manual action.

Ways to earn backlinks

  • Original data, surveys and free tools that others cite.
  • Digital PR and expert commentary for journalists.
  • Reclaiming unlinked brand mentions.
  • Fixing broken links: find a dead resource on another site and offer your page as a replacement (use the Broken Link Checker).

Data source

Backlinks come from the Moz Links API and are sorted by the authority of the linking domain. No index is complete — different tools find different links. Each visitor has a small monthly allowance of new domains. See summary metrics with the DA PA Checker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check backlinks for free?

Enter a domain and click Check now. You get the top backlinks found by Moz with source authority, anchor text and follow status.

Why don't I see all of my backlinks?

No crawler finds every link on the web, and this tool shows the strongest links first. Google Search Console's Links report shows links Google knows about.

Are nofollow backlinks worthless?

No. They pass little ranking value but can send visitors and build brand awareness, and Google treats nofollow as a hint.

Can bad backlinks hurt my site?

Google ignores most spammy links. Only large-scale manipulative link building usually causes problems.
