From MozRank to DA and PA
MozRank measured link popularity on a 0–10 logarithmic scale, and MozTrust estimated trust. Both were retired as Moz moved to machine-learning models that predict rankings directly. Today the useful Moz metrics are:
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Domain Authority | Ranking strength of the whole domain (1–100) |
| Page Authority | Ranking strength of one URL (1–100) |
| Spam Score | Share of similar sites that were penalised (risk indicator) |
| Linking root domains | How many different sites link to you |
| External backlinks | Total external links found by Moz |
How to interpret the numbers together
- High DA, low Spam Score — a trustworthy, well-linked site.
- Many backlinks but few linking domains — links concentrated on a few sites (site-wide footers, networks). Less valuable than they look.
- Low DA, high Spam Score — be careful about links from or to this site.

Frequently asked questions
Does MozRank still exist?
No. Moz retired MozRank and MozTrust. Domain Authority and Page Authority are their modern replacements.
Is Moz Spam Score a penalty?
No. It estimates risk by comparing a site with similar sites that were penalised. It is a reason to look closer, not proof of spam.
What is a linking root domain?
A unique website that links to you. Ten links from one site count as one linking root domain.
Is this data from Google?
No. All metrics come from Moz's own web index and models.
