How X picks preview data
X looks for twitter: tags first and falls back to Open Graph (og:title, og:description, og:image). So you can add just twitter:card if your OG tags are complete — but adding title, description and image explicitly gives you full control.
Image requirements
- Large image cards: 2:1 ratio, at least 300 × 157 px; 1200 × 630 works well everywhere.
- Summary cards: 1:1, at least 144 × 144 px.
- Under 5 MB; JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF (first frame).
Handles
twitter:site is the publisher's account; twitter:creator is the author. They show as attribution and link to your profile.
After publishing, check the result with the Open Graph Checker, which reads both twitter: and og: tags. Need the OG tags too? Use the Open Graph Generator.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Twitter card type?
summary_large_image for most pages. It shows a full-width image and gets more attention in the timeline than the small summary card.
Do Twitter cards still work on X?
Yes. X still reads twitter: meta tags and falls back to Open Graph tags when they are missing.
What image size should I use?
For large image cards use a 2:1 image such as 1200 × 600 or the common 1200 × 630, under 5 MB.
Do I need a card validator?
X removed its public card validator. Post the link in a draft or private account to test, or check your tags here and with the Open Graph Checker.
Can I use only Open Graph tags?
Mostly, yes. Add twitter:card so X knows which layout to use; the rest can come from Open Graph.
