Why link previews matter
When someone shares your page, the preview card is your ad. A big image with a clear headline gets far more clicks than a bare URL or a random logo pulled from the page. Without Open Graph tags, each platform guesses — and often picks the wrong image or a cookie banner as the description.
The essential tags
<meta property="og:title" content="How to Brew Cold Brew Coffee">
<meta property="og:description" content="A 5-minute guide with ratios and steeping times.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/img/cold-brew-1200x630.jpg">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/cold-brew">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
Image rules for every platform
- Size: 1200 × 630 px (1.91:1). This works on Facebook, LinkedIn, X and WhatsApp.
- Absolute HTTPS URL — relative paths like
/img/og.jpgare ignored by several platforms. - Under 5 MB, JPG or PNG. WebP works on most platforms but not all.
- Keep text in the centre — some apps crop the edges or show a square thumbnail.
X (Twitter) and LinkedIn specifics
X reads Open Graph tags but needs twitter:card to show a large image; set it to summary_large_image. LinkedIn uses og:title, og:image and og:description and caches previews for about a week — use the LinkedIn Post Inspector to refresh after changes. Facebook caches too; refresh with the Sharing Debugger.
How to read the checklist
- Red items (missing og:title or og:image) break the preview — fix these first.
- Amber items (description, og:url, og:type, twitter:card) improve consistency across platforms.
- The image preview loads the exact file platforms will fetch; if it does not appear here, it will not appear in shares either.
Need to write the tags? Use the Open Graph Generator and the Twitter Card Generator. Also check that og:url matches your canonical URL.
Frequently asked questions
How do I test how my link will look on LinkedIn?
Paste the URL here to see the og:title, og:description and og:image LinkedIn will use. LinkedIn caches previews, so after fixing tags use its Post Inspector to refresh.
What size should an Open Graph image be?
1200 × 630 pixels with a 1.91:1 ratio, under 5 MB, as JPG or PNG, linked with an absolute HTTPS URL.
Why is my old image still showing on Facebook?
Facebook caches link previews. Run the URL through the Facebook Sharing Debugger and click Scrape Again to load the new tags.
Do I need Twitter card tags if I have Open Graph?
X falls back to Open Graph for title, description and image, but you still need twitter:card set to summary_large_image to get the large image layout.
Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
They are not a ranking factor, but better previews increase clicks from social shares, which brings more visitors and more chances to earn links.
