How we identify the host
- Resolve the domain's IPv4 address.
- Query RDAP at the regional internet registry (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC) for the network name, owner organisation, IP range and country.
- Read the reverse-DNS hostname and HTTP headers such as
Server,cf-ray(Cloudflare),x-amz-cf-id(CloudFront) orx-vercel-id. - Match the results against known providers.
CDNs hide the real host
If a site uses Cloudflare, Fastly or CloudFront, the IP belongs to the CDN. The tool tells you when this is the case. The origin server's provider cannot be discovered from outside — which is exactly the protection a CDN provides.
Why check hosting?
- Competitor research — see which hosts fast competitors use.
- Abuse reports — report phishing or copyright infringement to the hosting provider's abuse contact.
- Migrations and audits — confirm a site really moved, or document infrastructure.
- Buying a website — understand what you are taking over.
Does hosting affect SEO?
Indirectly. Server speed (Time To First Byte), uptime and HTTPS support matter for user experience and crawling. Server location matters little when you use a CDN. Measure speed with the Page Size Checker and uptime with the Server Status Checker.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find a website's hosting provider?
Enter the domain. The checker resolves its IP and looks up the network owner via RDAP, reverse DNS and HTTP headers.
Why does it say Cloudflare?
The site is behind the Cloudflare CDN, so visitors connect to Cloudflare. The origin host is hidden and cannot be seen from outside.
Is the country the location of the server?
It is the country registered for the IP network. With CDNs and global providers, the physical server may be elsewhere.
Does server location affect rankings?
Very little today. Speed and reliability matter more, and a CDN serves visitors from nearby locations anyway.
