Why expand a short link?
- Safety — phishing and malware campaigns hide their real domain behind shorteners. Expanding first lets you check the destination without visiting it.
- Research — see which landing page a competitor's ad or tweet points to, including its UTM parameters.
- Link audits — shortened links in old content may now redirect somewhere unexpected or be broken.
- Clean sharing — replace a short link with the real URL where transparency matters, such as citations.
How it works
We request the short URL from our server, read each Location header and follow it, up to 10 hops. If a page uses a <meta http-equiv="refresh"> redirect instead of an HTTP redirect, we read that too. You see each hop with its status code (301, 302, 307, 308) and the final destination's domain, HTTP status and whether it uses HTTPS.
Reading the result
- Final destination — check the domain carefully. Look-alike domains (
paypa1.com) and long random subdomains are red flags. - Number of hops — one or two hops is normal. Long chains through several tracking domains are typical of affiliate and ad links, and sometimes of spam.
- HTTP status — a 404 at the end means the link is dead.
Limits
Some shorteners show a preview or CAPTCHA page instead of redirecting automated requests, and JavaScript-only redirects cannot be followed without a browser. In those cases the last hop shown is the shortener's own page. For a deeper look at every hop, use the Redirect Checker; to create your own transparent short links, use the URL Shortener.
Frequently asked questions
How can I see where a short link goes without clicking it?
Paste the short link into the URL expander. It follows the redirects on our server and shows the final destination, so your browser never opens the page.
Does it work with bit.ly and t.co links?
Yes. It works with any shortener that uses HTTP or meta-refresh redirects, including bit.ly, t.co, tinyurl, ow.ly and fvj.io.
Is a link safe if it expands to a known domain?
It is a good sign, but stay careful with look-alike domains and unexpected download pages. When in doubt, do not log in or download anything.
Why does the expander stop at the shortener page?
Some services show a preview, warning or CAPTCHA page to automated requests, or redirect with JavaScript only. Those cannot be followed automatically.
Do you visit the destination page?
Our server requests each hop to read its redirect, but only the headers and a small part of the page are downloaded. Your browser never visits the link.
