Why user agents look so confusing
Almost every browser starts with Mozilla/5.0 and mentions "like Gecko", "AppleWebKit" and "Safari" for historical compatibility — old websites only served modern pages to browsers that claimed to be Netscape (Mozilla). The real browser is identified by later tokens such as Chrome/141, Edg/141 or Firefox/131.
What we decode
- Browser and version — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Samsung Internet.
- Engine — Blink (Chromium), WebKit (Safari) or Gecko (Firefox).
- Operating system — Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, ChromeOS, Linux.
- Device type — desktop, mobile or tablet.
User-agent reduction
Chrome and other browsers now "freeze" parts of the user agent (for example the Windows and Android version numbers) for privacy and offer detailed data through User-Agent Client Hints instead. So a user agent may show "Windows NT 10.0" on Windows 11.
SEO uses
Search engine crawlers identify themselves too — Googlebot, Bingbot, GPTBot. You can write robots.txt rules per crawler with the Robots.txt Generator. See more about your browser with What Is My Browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is my user agent?
It is shown at the top of this page, decoded into browser, engine, operating system and device type.
Why does my user agent say Mozilla?
For historical compatibility, almost all browsers start with Mozilla/5.0. The real browser appears later in the string.
Why does Windows 11 show as Windows NT 10.0?
Browsers freeze the platform version in the user agent for privacy. Client Hints provide the real version when sites request it.
Can I change my user agent?
Yes, with browser developer tools or extensions, which is useful for testing how sites behave on other devices.
