What is a UTM link?

A UTM link is a normal URL with extra query parameters — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content — that tell Google Analytics where a visitor came from. They let you measure which emails, ads and posts drive traffic and sales.

How UTM tracking works

When someone clicks https://example.com/sale?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring_sale, the analytics script on your site reads those parameters and records the session under that source, medium and campaign. Nothing changes on the page itself — UTMs are labels for your reports.

GA4 tips

  • Medium decides the channel. GA4 maps mediums such as email, cpc, social and referral to its default channel groups. Unusual mediums end up in "Unassigned".
  • Google Ads auto-tagging (gclid) is better than manual UTMs for Google Ads; use UTMs for everything else.
  • Find your data in Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, then switch the dimension to "Session source / medium" or "Session campaign".

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Mixing capitalisation (Email vs email).
  2. Spaces in values — use underscores or hyphens.
  3. Tagging links between your own pages.
  4. Putting personal data (emails, names) into UTM values — it violates Google's terms and privacy laws.

From tagged URL to shareable link

Tagged URLs are long. Shorten them with the URL Shortener or turn them into a QR code for print with the QR Code Generator. Tagging many links at once? Use the Bulk UTM Builder.

Frequently asked questions

What does UTM stand for?

UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, named after Urchin, the analytics company Google bought to create Google Analytics.

Where do I see UTM data in GA4?

Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and change the primary dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign.

Do I need UTMs for Google Ads?

Usually not. Turn on auto-tagging in Google Ads, which adds the gclid parameter and imports richer data. Use UTMs for email, social, QR codes and partners.

Will UTM parameters create duplicate content?

They can create extra URLs, so make sure each page has a self-referencing canonical tag pointing to the clean URL.

Can I shorten a UTM link?

Yes. Shorten the full tagged URL; the short link redirects with all parameters intact, so analytics still records them.
