IP lists vs domain lists
- IP blacklists (Spamhaus ZEN, SpamCop, Barracuda, UCEPROTECT…) list mail-server IPs that sent spam. They matter for whoever sends your email — your own server or your email provider.
- Domain blacklists (Spamhaus DBL, SURBL, URIBL) list domains found in spam messages. A listing affects any email that mentions your domain, even if sent by someone else.
Reading results
"Not listed" is good. "LISTED" includes the response code, which on most lists indicates the reason. "Unavailable" means the list refused or rate-limited our query (Spamhaus, for example, blocks queries from some public resolvers) — it is not a listing.
If you are listed
- Find the cause first: a compromised account or website, an open relay, a spam-sending plugin, or a purchased mailing list.
- Fix it: change passwords, clean malware, update CMS plugins, stop sending to unverified lists.
- Authenticate your mail: set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC (check with the DNS Records Checker).
- Request delisting on each list's website. Many lists expire entries automatically once spam stops; some (like UCEPROTECT Level 2/3) list entire provider ranges and are widely ignored by major mailbox providers.
Shared hosting
On shared servers, another customer's spam can get the shared IP listed. If that happens repeatedly, send email through a dedicated provider (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or a transactional service) rather than your web server.
A blacklisted domain may also host malware — scan it and verify HTTPS with the SSL Checker.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my domain is blacklisted?
Enter the domain or IP. The checker queries major IP and domain blocklists and shows whether it is listed on each one.
Why are my emails going to spam?
Common reasons are a blacklisted sending IP, missing SPF, DKIM or DMARC records, or content and sending patterns that look like spam.
How do I get removed from a blacklist?
Fix the cause of the spam first, then use the delisting form on each list's website. Many listings expire automatically once spam stops.
What does Unavailable mean?
The blocklist did not answer our query, often due to rate limits. It does not mean the domain is listed.
Can a blacklist affect SEO?
Email blacklists do not affect Google rankings directly, but a domain listed for malware or phishing may also be flagged by browsers.
