UTM Parameters Explained: GA4 Campaign Tracking Guide
UTM parameters tell Google Analytics exactly which email, ad or post sent each visitor. Get the naming right and your reports become a growth map; get it wrong and they fill up with "(not set)".
UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL — such as ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=october_launch — that tell analytics tools where a visitor came from. Google Analytics 4 reads them when the page loads and attributes the session to that source, medium and campaign, so you can see which channels actually drive traffic and conversions.
Key takeaways: always set source, medium and campaign · use lowercase and underscores · use GA4's standard mediums (email, cpc, social, referral) · never tag internal links · tag many links at once with the Bulk UTM Builder.
The five UTM parameters
| Parameter | Question it answers | Examples |
|---|---|---|
utm_source | Who sent the visitor? | newsletter, facebook, google, partnername |
utm_medium | What type of channel? | email, social, cpc, display, referral, qr |
utm_campaign | Which campaign? | october_launch, black_friday_2026 |
utm_term | Which keyword? (paid search) | running_shoes |
utm_content | Which link or creative? | header_button, banner_b, link_3 |
Only utm_source is technically required, but in practice you should always include medium and campaign. GA4 also supports utm_id, utm_source_platform and utm_creative_format for advanced setups.
How GA4 uses UTM tags
GA4 groups traffic into default channel groups such as Email, Organic Social, Paid Search and Referral. The utm_medium (and sometimes the source) decides the group. If you use an unusual medium like utm_medium=newsletter-blast, the session lands in "Unassigned" and disappears from your channel reports. Stick to standard values: email, social, paid_social, cpc, display, affiliate, referral.
To see your campaigns, open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and switch the primary dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign.
Naming conventions that keep reports clean
- Lowercase everything. GA4 is case-sensitive:
Facebook, facebookandFBare three different sources. - No spaces. Use underscores or hyphens — spaces become
%20and are easy to mistype. - Be consistent over time. Write the rules down in a shared sheet: approved sources, mediums and a campaign naming pattern such as
yyyy_mm_theme. - Use utm_content for variations — which button, which image, which link position.
- Never put personal data in UTMs (emails, names, phone numbers). It breaks Google's terms and privacy law.
Where UTMs belong — and where they don't
Tag links you place outside your website: emails, social posts, paid ads on platforms without auto-tagging, partner sites, QR codes on print, podcast show notes and influencer content. Do not tag internal links between your own pages: a UTM click starts a new session and overwrites the visitor's real source, which corrupts attribution.
For Google Ads, leave auto-tagging (the gclid parameter) switched on instead of manual UTMs — it imports far richer data.
Tagging one link vs many
For a single link, the UTM Builder is fastest: paste the URL, fill in the fields and copy the result. For newsletters with fifteen links or a month of social posts, use the Bulk UTM Builder: paste every URL, enter the values once and add {n} to utm_content to number each link automatically (link_1, link_2…).
Make tagged links shareable
Tagged URLs are long and look untrustworthy in posts and SMS. Shorten them with the URL Shortener — the short link redirects with every parameter intact — or turn them into a QR code for print, with utm_medium=qr so offline scans show up separately.
UTMs and SEO
UTM parameters create extra URL variations of the same page. Search engines rarely index them, but to be safe every page should carry a self-referencing canonical pointing to the clean URL. If you ever need to strip tags from a list of URLs, the Query Parameter Remover does it in one click.
Frequently asked questions
What does UTM stand for?
UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, named after Urchin Software, the analytics company Google acquired to build Google Analytics.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. Google Analytics treats Email and email as different values, so keep every UTM value lowercase.
Do UTM tags slow down a website?
No. They are just query parameters read by the analytics script; they do not change how the page loads.
Should I use UTMs on Google Ads?
Usually not. Enable auto-tagging so Google Ads adds the gclid parameter, which imports more detailed data than manual UTMs.
Can I use UTM parameters on internal links?
No. UTMs on internal links start a new session and overwrite the visitor's real traffic source.
